The Good Samaritan is a long favorite parable. We love to compare ourselves to the good Samaritan, the person who helps the stranger along the road. Progressives especially love this one; we can name all the kinds of people who we are willing to help, particularly the ones who conservative Christians would condemn. But we fool ourselves if we think there is no one we mistrust or even hate, if we think ourselves always the hero. For whom do we struggle to find mercy, and how can we get there?
