History

The first Journey Gathering was held on June 5, 1999, with ten charter community members. The staff and leadership of Gaston Oaks Baptist Church, in concert with a small leadership team and founding pastor Scott Gornto, envisioned a place in Dallas where people could experience authenticity, creativity, beauty, and justice. Journey quickly became a home for many who were searching for a different kind of community.

The community continued to grow slowly and relationally, and in 2001, the Journey Gathering became Journey Church, an independent congregation. In November 2004, our founding pastor stepped down and handed the leadership of Journey to the Elders, Leaders, and community. During the next nine months community members offered their time and talents, continuing to embody the vision and values of Journey.

Kayla Coffee-Prose is the pastor at Journey. She was ordained in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and served in several associate minister roles before coming to Journey. Kayla grew up in San Antonio, studied French at UT Austin, and graduated from seminary at Brite Divinity School (TCU). She is married to Fester Coffee-Prose and together they have a young daughter. Kayla reads a lot of books, spends an inordinate amount of time playing with her daughter, and obsesses over what it would look like to live more simply.

In 2015 the community began space sharing with United Disciples Christian Church just off of Belt Line and Central Expressway. It is our hope that this location central to major highways would benefit the many community members who come from near and far to gather on Sunday evenings.

Journey continues to be a family of pilgrims, committed to faith transformation, within and outside our walls. We invite you to join us and learn more about where God is taking us as we seek to live as people of God in today’s world.
